Repousse

The Artist’s Vision

My goal in my art is to create balance.

The rough, organic lines of the drawings contrast with the shiny sparkle of the metal.  Dark crevices accompany graceful shapes.  The work is primitive yet elegant.  The art appears to consist of carefully restored artifacts that had been buried for years.

I believe a major goal of life is achieving balance.  We attempt to balance the physical with the spiritual, our emotions with our intellect. We participate in a sublime dance as we maintain and regain our equilibrium.  The rare moments when we achieve perfect balance are exquisite.

The Images

JERUSALEM is the capital and largest city in Israel in both size and population.  It is the spiritual center of the Jewish people.  It also contains several sites that are of significance to Christians and Muslims.

RACHEL’S TOMB is the gravesite of the Biblical matriarch Rachel and is regarded as one of the holiest sights in Israel.

THE HAMSA is a hand shaped symbol that is used in homes and businesses, on key chains, as amulets, and as jewelry to protect against the “evil eye”.  The shape of an eye and the color blue are also used in conjunction with the Hamsa or independent of it.

The Hebrew words “AMEN” and “MIZRACH” (East, the direction in America that faces Jerusalem) are used in some of the artwork.

The Medium

In many of the repousse  pieces, I use cold enamel, jewelry fragments, and semi-precious stones embedded in or applied to copper, brass or aluminum.

The images are of architecture, flowers, crowns, Hebrew words, and abstract.
